Hands-on heroes: Barsanti Bulldogs explore the magic of the apple
Students at Barsanti Elementary School turned curiosity into discovery April 20 during a hands-on “Apple Seeds Experiment” that brought science to life in the classrooms of teachers Dottie Mullinix and Nicole Wilson.
The lesson began with a simple observation — apples grow from seeds — and a big question to spark critical thinking: Do all apples have the same number of seeds? Students made predictions based on the fruit’s size and color, then tested their ideas through a multisensory investigation. They observed, touched, smelled and carefully counted seeds while practicing fine motor skills and recording findings.
The activity engaged young learners, many of whom benefit from targeted instructional supports, by turning abstract concepts into tangible experiences. Excitement filled the room as students shared observations and celebrated each new finding, whether an apple held three seeds or 10.
“I liked getting the seeds out of the skin,” one student said. Another added, “I liked the frozen juice apples!”
Teachers emphasized the value of students thinking and acting like scientists. “We love seeing our Bulldogs ask questions and get truly excited about what they discover,” Mullinix and Wilson said. “It’s the best part of our day.”
The lesson reflects DoWEA’s focus on building strong foundational skills in science and inquiry that help prepare students to become informed, engaged citizens. Success came through teamwork, with paraprofessionals and staff providing one-on-one support and ensuring materials were ready.
“Without our entire team, a day like this wouldn’t be possible,” the teachers noted. “It’s the combined effort of everyone in this building that creates the safe, encouraging environment our students need to take risks and explore.”
